Bruised, Scarred, and Badass: Turning an Invisible Disease into a Visible Strength
Bliss Louvar and her running partner are at the top of a hill, looking toward some of Salt Lake's gorgeous mountains. I was five years old in a sterile hospital room with strangers poking me with syringes and placing IVs while my mom and dad were crying. All I knew was that the hospital-grade cup with ice water had never tasted so good. Someone mentioned I had severe hyperglycemia, with blood sugar elevated around 650 mg/dL. I was just learning what numbers meant in kindergar

Disability & AI III - Building a Better Digital World
A visualization of human-technology interaction, depicting a hand connected to a circuit with vibrant, flowing lines, symbolizing data exchange, alongside a hand holding a stylus, signifying the blend of creativity and technology. When it comes to world-building (creating immersive fictional worlds, like Middle Earth or Dune’s Arrakis), there’s a golden rule: the world is only as believable as the logic you build into its foundation. If the physics are inconsistent or the soc

The Curb-Cut Effect
Historically speaking the curb-cut effect can be linked to UC Berkeley Student Activists. We are so proud of our INCIGHT Scholar Jada Yang, continuing the effort to make the world accessible.

Disability & AI Part II - Cyber Curb-Cut, meet Cyber Speedbump
Digital silhouettes navigate a virtual grid, with one figure using a seeing-eye cane. Image generated with Google Gemini. In Disability and AI I - AI Breaking Barriers, we looked at the “Cyber Curb Cut”—how AI tools built for the disability community end up making life easier for everyone. But a curb cut made of concrete is just a predictable dip in the sidewalk. A curb cut made of code is different. If the code is built on biased data, that “dip in the sidewalk” might actual

The Silent Majority: Inside Streetcar 82
There’s a place in Hyattsville, Maryland called Streetcar 82 Brewing Co.. You’d expect to walk in and hear music thumping and people talking, but you won’t. Instead, you’ll see people pointing to a taplist, writing notes on their smartphones to show the staff, or writing on a reusable “doodle board”. Streetcar 82 is entirely Deaf-owned and -operated, and the doodle board is a perfect low-tech solution to bridge the worlds of those who can hear and those who can’t. This inevit

AI Breaking Barriers
Recently, the topic of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been a huge thing in the public consciousness; people have been talking about this technology’s environmental impact, possible benefits for humanity, and more. However, we’re overlooking one of the biggest impacts it has: helping people with disabilities participate in an able-bodied world. I’d dare to say that it’s almost as big as curb cuts—those dips in the sidewalk that were “rolled out” (pun intended) for wheelchair

Entrepreneur Spotlight: JD Duran
JD Duran didn’t set out to become an entrepreneur—it happened by accident. In this Entrepreneur Spotlight, JD shares how his freelance digital marketing work grew organically from community storytelling, how living with Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease shaped his approach to patience and creative problem-solving, and why inclusion means more than just having a seat at the table. His journey shows how disability-informed perspectives can strengthen organizations and the communities

Deemed Impossible
On the day of my thirteenth birthday, my birthday cake rested on the table— I was now entering the most significant years of my life—or so they say. The best years, they call them—my teen years. As I blew out the candles, perhaps my destiny was set. Two months later, my life changed completely. It took a turn no human could predict. I’d fallen sick, but this sickness was no cold, no ache that would fade with time. It would last my whole life, and I’d have to grow to accept t

INCIGHT Scholar Leader: We have so much work to do!
INCIGHT’s mission has always been rooted in changing hearts and minds about how society views disability. Each year, INCIGHT Scholars exemplify this mission through their leadership, advocacy, and commitment to creating a more inclusive world. One remarkable example is Jada Yang, a sophomore at the University of California, Berkeley, who is quickly emerging as a powerful voice in disability rights and public policy.

A Masterpiece In The Making - Up and Coming Artist Kobey Bonin
am honored to share this beautiful story that I have titled “A Masterpiece in the Making”. Yes, it is a story about art, but the true masterpiece in the making is the artist, Kobey Bonin. Kobey’s disability is Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. He was diagnosed around the age of 12 and got his first wheelchair at 15. Today at the age of 27, he is an inspiration to many throughout the art and disability communities.

Movers & Shakers - INCIGHT Scholars Making a Difference
We are grateful to all the participants and members of the INCIGHT Community. We had the opportunity to interview some of our previous scholarship recipients and jobseekers and asked them to share the impact they are making in the world. With a special focus on DIVERSITY, we also asked them to share what this word means and why it matters to them.

When you leverage obstacles, you face the challenge head on, showing who you are and what you are capable of. At its core is human potential, and being able to fully tap into and unlock your greatest abilities.

From "Living in a Van" to "VIP": Kevin Glenn's Vocational Rehab Experience
When Kevin Glenn went to his local Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) office in 2011, his life was in shambles, both personally and professionally.
He struggled to hold down jobs and have healthy relationships. For a few years, he didn’t have stable housing and was sleeping on friends’ couches or in a van.
“I was at rock bottom. I didn’t know what to do.” Said Kevin, who lives in the small eastern Oregon town of Enterprise.
He had no idea he was living with mental health condi
