If you take a video game “as is” and play it, you’re playing the “vanilla” version. If you install custom content to tailor it to your desired level of usability, visuals, or performance, you’re playing a “modded” version. What if we thought of real life as a game too? Using this perspective, the game is designed for a base of able-bodied and able-minded players, and disability is seen as a “bug” or permanent “debuff” to a character’s stats.
There are several models of disability. The classic medical model says that a person in a wheelchair is inherently disabled (this is the “debuff”); the social model says that although the impairment is inherent, the debuff is that lack of accommodations imposes challenges; and the middle-ground biopsychosocial model says that the debuff comes from the interplay of environment and the “specs” and “stats” of one’s body and mind. This latter model isn’t a bandaid-like “patch” to cover up uncomfortable physical realities of disability, it’s a “patch” as in a fix for the “bugs” in the other two models, a holistic strategy for optimizing the “user experience” of people with disabilities. Rather than view disability as a “glitch” in the person or in society and asking for a fix, I suggest we view it as a compatibility error between our hardware and society’s outdated software. To fix it, we need more than just “repairs”—we need a total “Modding Mindset.”
The Mental Processing Load: Why Accessibility is More Than Just Hardware
If you have an able body—or even a mostly-able body, like me—it can be easy to take for granted the conveniences that you have but don’t need. These keep the impaired body from “overheating” in a lot of cases, but they can only address the physical components. A “bug in the code” of a person’s mind can’t be patched by placing things like ramps or Braille signage everywhere; if we want a society where everyone has a fair shot at doing 100% of what this game called Life has to offer, we can’t forget the software.
Navigating barriers, even if successful, is mentally taxing, the same as a computer having to run multiple programs at once. Our “latency” goes up, meaning it takes us longer to respond to things, and we’re that much closer to burnout or a “Blue Screen of Death.” The “modding mindset” is about removing barriers to optimum performance and respecting things like tics or the invisible pain of fibromyalgia as an inexorable part of a person’s physiological “hardware”—they won’t disappear just because we rewrite the “legacy code” to include more ramps and automatic doors, and accommodations aren’t special favors, they’re “hacks” that improve our performance despite hardware limitations. True, genuine accessibility should ensure that users don’t have to work twice as hard as non-disabled counterparts just to reach the “main menu” and hit “start”. The proof is in the data: the current corporate and digital strategy of treating accessibility as an afterthought is an engineering failure. Recent digital audits from organizations like WebAIM reveal that a staggering 94.8% of the world's top one million website homepages fail basic accessibility standards, averaging over 50 distinct errors per page. This isn't just an inconvenience, it’s a massive compatibility block that shuts out an estimated 1.3 billion players worldwide.
Worse, trying to fix these bugs after the fact is a massive waste of resources. The Open-Source Community: Crowdsourcing the Workaround
In the modding world, no one works in a vacuum. If a game is released with a game-breaking bug, the community doesn’t wait for an official developer update; they create an “unofficial patch” and share it for free. The disability community has been doing this for decades. Whether it’s sharing “life hacks” for chronic pain management on a forum or designing 3D-printed assistive tools, we are essentially an open-source movement.
When we share these “mods,” we aren’t just helping one person; we are building a library of collective knowledge. This is how we move from individual “hacks” to systemic change. By advocating for these mods to become the new “default settings” in our schools and workplaces, we ensure that the next person who joins the game doesn't have to start their mod-list from scratch. We are rewriting the global source code, one shared patch at a time.
The Final Level: Aiming for 100% Completion
The ultimate goal of a “Completionist” in gaming is to see everything the game has to offer—not just rushing to beat the final boss, but unlocking every achievement, playing through every optional storyline, and charting every single corner of the map just to experience the world in its absolute entirety. In the game of Life, “100% Completion” isn't typically possible, but the closest amount shouldn't be reserved for those with the standard hardware. True, genuine accessibility looks like a world where the fit between your body/mind and the world is so well-optimized that your physical/mental abilities no longer dictate your ability to enjoy life.
We have to stop viewing the world as a finished product and start seeing it as a Sandbox. It’s an ongoing development cycle where we are all beta testers. By adopting a Modding Mindset, we move past the era of “repairs” and into the era of “optimization”—things like neuro-inclusive workspaces with low-sensory zones, asynchronous education systems, and modular public transit. We stop trying to "fix the player" to fit a broken game and start building a world that is natively compatible with the beautiful, messy variety of human hardware.
A joke I’ve heard from my disabled colleagues goes “I’m playing life on Hard Mode.” It’s time to stop expecting people to play on "Hard Mode" just because the developers didn’t include them in the vision. Let's patch the world.
